Steve counsels clients on a wide variety of patent and trademark matters, as well as matters relating to strategic competition within industries. Steve is experienced in developing and executing long-term strategies for the development of an intellectual-property portfolio to meet the unique goals of individual clients, including licensing and leveraging of proprietary and patented technology. He also drafts and assists clients to negotiate a variety of agreements, including licensing agreements, joint-development and cooperative business (supply) agreements, non-disclosure agreements, and other transactional and settlement agreements relating to intellectual property. Steve advises and renders opinions regarding the patentability of inventions, freedom to operate and infringement, as well as prepares and prosecutes patent applications in the chemical, biochemical and mechanical arts. He also regularly counsels clients concerning branding issues and the selection and adoption of trademarks, including the registration and assertion of both domestic and global trademark portfolios. In addition to counseling, Steve handles a variety of patent, trademark and copyright disputes, ranging from the defense and settlement of so-called ‘troll’ patent cases to litigating complex matters in federal court. He also routinely litigates trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board at the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Pearne & Gordon, Steve was a chemical engineer at a small R&D firm performing chemical-separations research.

Steve is a member of the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association.
