Greg York is a partner at Pearne & Gordon LLP. Greg’s practice focuses on counseling companies, research institutions, and entrepreneurs regarding their patent, trademark, licensing, and related business issues.

Greg prepares and prosecutes patents involving biotechnology, chemistry, and medical devices, among other fields. Examples include biopharmaceuticals, stem cells, vaccines, organ preservation solutions, agricultural biotechnology, crop enhancement, biopolymer production, aerogels, alloys, pulp processing, hard-tissue implants, gastroenterology products, ostomy products, and biocompatible tissue grafts.

Greg also represents clients in asserting their patents and trademarks, and avoiding infringement of patents and trademarks of others. This includes preparing opinions on patentability, infringement, and validity, conducting product clearance searches, and advising about approaches for designing around patent claims. This also includes defending patents in inter partes review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the USPTO.

Greg has served as an expert witness in a state court case involving a dispute between a company and a former employee regarding ownership of a patent and related trade secrets.

Prior to entering the legal field, Greg was a senior scientist at USB Corporation, a manufacturer of reagents for life science research. Greg was also a DOE-Energy Biosciences Fellow of the Life Sciences Research Foundation and earned a Ph.D. in Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Greg conducted research on bacterial production of biodegradable plastics and on symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

Greg is a member of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, where he has served on the Ethics and Professionalism Committee since 2014, including as Chair in 2018. Greg also is a member of the American Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers.
